The Triumphal Entry

The Ultimate witnesses are seen on the Mount of Transfiguration

Jesus provides incontrovertible evidence that He is both Christ and King when He literally radiates the glory of God before His disciples on Mount Hermon.

In the persons of Elijah and Moses He calls the entire Old Testament as His witness and receives encouragement for is exodus.

God the Father, the Ultimate Witness, validates the person and work of Christ at the beginning and the end of Jesus’ ministry.

Jesus has provided the full and final evidence of His personhood and His deity, in that, after suffering and dying He overcame the final enemy, death.

We too are called to witness to His glory revealed in us.

Who is the biggest celebrity or most famous person you ever met in person?  Did you get to speak to them?  What was your impression?

Have you ever seen a king?  How about on the television?  How is a king different from a President?

Approximately 6 months have passed since Jesus revealed Himself on Mount Hermon and healed the blind man in Jerusalem on the Feast of Tabernacles.

The disciples continue their debate about who will be the greatest in the kingdom and James and John even went to Jesus to ask for the most prestigious positions.  After all, the King establishes His own staff.

Jesus has done many things to demonstrate who He is to those who follow Him.  The most astounding was raising Lazarus from the dead which caused news about Him to travel all over Jerusalem.

Yet, the religious leaders are resolute in their desire to kill Him, silence Him and end the challenge to their authority.

There were times in Jesus’ ministry when He performed miracles and the people sought to make Him King (Jn 6).  There were many times when Jesus spoke the truth that so offended the leaders that they wanted to stone Him (Jn 7,8).  There was even a time when his own brothers challenged Him to go to Jerusalem and make Himself known or the time when His own mother asked Him to intervene at the wedding feast.  In each of these cases Jesus response was the same, my time has not yet come.  What did Jesus mean By this?

God’s timeline given to Daniel (Dan 9) by the Angel Gabriel gives us the answer.  Daniel had been in captivity in Babylon 70 years and in CH 9 He is praying and confessing the sins of his family and all Israel and asking for God’s mercy.  In response to His prayer God sends the angel to assure Daniel that Israel still has a future and that His promises to Israel through Abraham and David have not been nullified. The angel tells Daniel that 70 7’sabatical yrs (490 years) remain for Israel. The Christ

He goes on to say from the time of the order to restore and rebuild Jerusalem till the ANNOINTED ONE COMES there will be 69 7’s = 483 years .  Tonight we will look at the fulfillment of this prophecy.

Luke 19

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King

28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”

32Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

35They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

28 Jesus had been in Jericho by the Jordan and He begins to make His way to Jerusalem where He know He will fulfill scripture and be crucified.  They will be celebrating the Passover for the last time and Jesus will be fulfilling it forever.

30 How does Jesus know there will be a colt of a donkey that has never been ridden in a particular place in Bethany?  Had He already made arrangements?

The answer is in His instructions. “Tell them The Lord (Kyrios-Master with absolute ownership rights) has need of it.  He knew because He is Lord of all.

32 They found it just as he told them.

Mathew adds :  Mt 21:4This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

5“Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you,

gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ (Zech 9:9)

He is fulfilling Scripture and will throughout the coming week.

How do kings normally ride in to the city?

Riding a white horse with captives in their train, as conquerors

What does the donkey symbolize?

He is the King of Peace

35 What are the people doing?

Worshipping Jesus openly, why?

BECAUSE HIS TIME HAS COME

What time has come?

The time given to Daniel 483 years earlier, this is the day the ANNOINTED ONE (THE CHRIST) IS COME

This is the only time Jesus allowed Himself to be worshipped publicly during His ministry.

37 Who were those in the crowd?  What were they doing? Why?

They were disciples praising god because of the miracles they had seen, what?

38“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”

40“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it

Luke 13 Companion Verse: 34″O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it! 35“Behold, your house is left to you desolate (the temple); and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!'”

42and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.

Ro 11:25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, 26and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written:

“The deliverer will come from Zion;

he will turn godlessness away from Jacob

38 What do the disciples call Jesus?

In Luke they call Him King

In Mathew they call Him :

the “Son of David”

The Prophet from Nazareth

Who did Jesus say He was when He sent the disciples to get the colt?

“The Lord” not one who comes in the name of the Lord.

They understood him to be messiah but did not grasp that He was the Son of God, Lord of all.

39 How did the Pharisees see Jesus? What is their objection?

As a mere man, a teacher of good things

They want Jesus to stop what they consider to be blasphemy.

40 How does Jesus respond, why?

Why would the stones cry out; because this is the day, this is the time.  The time established in eternity past by the entire God Head, Father, Son and Holy Spirit for the Christ to be revealed.

The day All creation has waited for since the fall of man. Romans 8

41 On this very special day when men are recognizing and worshipping Jesus as Messiah King of the Jews; what is Jesus doing? Why?

Jesus is weeping

because the vast majority of Jews observing the spectacle were not His followers,

were not waiting for this day given to Daniel

Because Jesus knows the road ahead for Jerusalem is filled with sorrow and 2000 years of desolation.

This breaks God’s heart that men are not keeping pace with Him

42 What is the affect of Israel not recognizing their savior?

Paul explains in Romans 11 that God has given them a spirit of stupor , they have experienced a hardening that opens the gospel to the Gentiles until all the gentiles come in.

We are seeing Israel turn to her savior in our day.

43The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.  44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.

They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be a house of prayer’ ; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’ ”

47 Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. 48Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words

Mt 21: 14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.

15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.

16“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.

“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,

“ ‘From the lips of children and infants

you, Lord, have called forth your praise’

43-44  In AD 70 emperor Titus went into Jerusalem erected siege works, burned the city, took the temple apart stone by stone to remove the gold between the stones and killed many.

Why did this happen?

Because they did not recognize the day of God’s visitation to them.

They were expected to know the prophecy and to be alert and looking expectantly towards this day.

45 Jesus cleanses the temple for a second time, why?

They filled the court of the gentiles with merchants and money changers effectively preventing the gentiles form coming to worship God.

They lost sight of their mission and purpose.  God called Abraham to be a blessing to the whole world.

47 Jesus continued teaching right up to the time He was taken to be crucified.

14 Jesus continued providing evidence of the power and presence of God up to the end

Even the children recognized who He was because it was painfully evident to those who would see.

Yet the religious leaders were blinded by rage and jealousy.

There was only 1 time during Jesus earthly ministry Jesus allowed Himself to be publicly worshipped, we celebrate the day known as Palm Sunday.

On this day Jesus was adhering to a calendar concerning the coming of the Anointed One given to the prophet Daniel By God’s messenger, the angel Gabriel, in 536 BC.  Recorded in Daniel Ch 9.

Jesus’ followers went ahead of Him into Jerusalem with shouts of praise and worship to their King.

Once again, the religious leaders of the day demanded Jesus silence His followers for they understood this praise to be reserved for God alone and considered this an act of blasphemy.

Jesus replied that even if they were quiet the stones would cry out.  For this was the day God had planned to reveal His Anointed One. God’s plan for eternity fulfilled on His divine timetable.

Most of the people present and the religious leaders of the day were not watching and waiting for the Christ.

Jesus wept over Jerusalem because they were not ready and this would mean destruction for Jerusalem .

So what is the application for us?

We can take comfort in knowing that God has a plan,

That the entire God Head is involved in perfectly executing that plan.

His plan is for the redemption of all mankind. Jesus says because of the Jewish unbelief the Gentiles receive the call of God.

So when will this plan be completed and how should we prepare?

1 Thes 5:1 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. 3 While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.

4But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; 5for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; 6so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.
