The Eternal Questions Every Man Needs  Answers to: Discussion May 4, 2016

Who or what is God?

  • The First Cause, the root of all that is. Gen 1:1
  • Eternally self existent Spirit Being John 4
  • Being who created everything that is. (Evidence for Design) Gen 1:1, John 1, Col 1, Heb 1
  • What can be known about God from the creation?
    • He is above and beyond all things, transcendent.
    • He sustains all things
    • He is infinitely wise
    • He is indescribably powerful
    • He is the great initiator of all things. He is not a contingent being.  He is the I am.
    • Through Him, all things live and breathe and have their being. We are the product of His mind, His heart and His will. Part of Him is in us and all of creation.
    • God is independent of everything else in creation.
    • He is the initiator of all things, all thought, and all wisdom flow from Him.
    • God is at liberty to do as He pleases with what He has made. Ro 9-11
    • What has been made is not at liberty to question His good purposes Ro 9-11
    • He exists outside of time and space and all other dimensionality
    • Since through science we have come to know that this universe is finely tuned for the purpose of supporting life we can deduce that it was God’s good intention that we live. Science is the discovery of what God has done in all His wisdom to provide for and sustain what has been made.

Can we know this God? If so how?

  • We can know about Him through what He has made (General Revelation) Ro 1:18-23
    • We can marvel at the grandeur of the scale of His accomplishment
    • We should be in awe at the finest details of the smallest beings He has created
    • We should wonder at the systems He has put designed to sustain life
      • The stars and heavenly bodies that mark time and seasons for us.
      • The weather patterns that bring rain and cause crops to grow
      • The systems within our own bodies designed for self healing.
    • Can we know Him personally? If so How? If God is infinite and outside time and space; How can we as finite beings begin to understand Him?
      • God must reveal Himself to us in order for us to know Him?
    • Does God reveal Himself to mankind or any other beings? If so in what ways? (Special Revelation)
      • Face to Face personal revelation to individual men. (Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Daniel, John the Baptist, Mary & Joseph, etc…)
      • Through the inspiration of the Spirit (see Jesus conversation with Nicodemus Jn Ch 3)
      • Through the written word inspired by His spirit to His chosen prophets, priests and kings
      • In Dreams and Visions (Daniel, Joseph OT, Joseph NT)
      • Via heavenly messengers, angels (Daniel, Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds in the fields)
      • In His favor and in His wrath towards man we learn what God approves and disapproves
      • Through supernatural means we call miracles we see His grace extended to us.
      • Through prophecy – He tells prophets in advance and it comes to pass – the we know the message came from outside time.
      • Through His people whom He has called and relates to daily. (He uses us to get the good news to the fallen world)
      • Finally, Through His Son, the perfect expression of His being. (Hebrews 1, Co 1:15-20, Col 2:9-10, Jn 1:1-5, 14)
    • What has mankind come to know about God by means of revelation?
      • God is Holy, perfect in wisdom, merciful and just.
      • We were made in His image and God’s intentions for us are good.
      • All love originates with this Holy, loving, providing, calling God
      • We have fallen from grace because of sin.
      • Sin separates us from this all Good and Holy God.
      • We are not able to remedy our fallen state.
      • We can only approach God on His terms.
      • His terms demand Holiness and justice without which fellowship with Our Holy, Eternal, Father is impossible.
      • Sin is the problem
      • Jesus is the answer. God’s love, grace and mercy poured out on the cross.
      • It is this the Bible refers to as Good News, why is it Good news?
        • Because God did not leave us to die in our sins
        • Because He so loved us that He became the solution for us.
        • Because eternity in exile from God is unthinkably horrible.
        • Because there is a way that seems right to a man but the end is death.
        • Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the life and no man comes to the Father but by Me. It is exclusive, in that, there is only one way but it does not exclude anyone who will come to Christ.
        • This is what Paul is speaking of in the first three Chapters of Ephesians. The blessings of God planned from before the creation of the world and available to all who will come.
